If you’re a parent of a high school student, you’ve probably had some version of this conversation:

“Have you started?”
“Do you know what you’re doing?”
“Do you need help?”

And if you’re being honest… the answers are usually vague. Or delayed. Or met with a shrug.

What’s confusing is that schools are doing more than ever to support students through the college process. Most students today have access to college and career counselors, planning platforms, workshops, and resources for everything from essays to financial aid.

On paper, it looks like everything is covered.

So why do so many students still feel stuck?

The issue isn’t a lack of information. It’s what happens after that information is given.

Students are often handed tools without a clear path for how to use them. They log into platforms but don’t know where to begin. They attend presentations and walk away with more questions than answers. They hear general advice but struggle to apply it to their own situation.

And without structure, even the best resources can start to feel overwhelming.

Now layer that on top of real life.

Today’s students are juggling full academic schedules, extracurriculars, social lives, and often part-time jobs. The college application process doesn’t exist in a vacuum—it’s competing for time and attention in an already full schedule.

So when a student delays getting started, it’s easy to assume they’re unmotivated.

But more often, they’re just unsure where to begin and how to move forward in a way that feels manageable.

It doesn’t help that they’re also hearing advice from everywhere. Friends, teachers, coaches, parents, and online sources all offering input. Some of it is helpful. Some of it contradicts itself. And instead of creating clarity, it often adds to the noise.

Progress reports are meant to keep parents in the loop but sometimes they bring more questions than answers. If your child’s grades don’t reflect their effort or intelligence, or if teachers are noting disruptive behaviors, it can be both confusing and frustrating.

When to Be Concerned

Sudden drop in grades: A sharp decline may point to more than just a “bad week.”
Strong effort, low results: If your child studies but test scores don’t match, it could signal learning differences.
Behavior changes at school: Acting out, constant distractions, or emotional outbursts can all interfere with academics.
Consistent teacher concerns: Ongoing feedback about focus, homework, or social interactions deserves a closer look.

Helping Young Children Communicate

Parents often wonder how to help their young children build communication skills. Read on for a few tips to enhance your child’s language abilities.

Children learn by watching and listening to others. Get in the habit of narrating your day as if you are a newscaster.

o Describe aloud what you are doing:

Example: While you are helping them get dressed, you could say “I am putting on your pants because it is cold outside.”

o Narrate what your child is doing:

Example: While they play, you could say, “You are picking up the tiles and making them stick together!”

o Speak loudly and clearly, emphasizing important words.

Example: During bath time, you could say “I’m washing your HAIR. Now I’m washing your BELLY.” (emphasizing the words)

o Read with your child each day. Focus on labeling what you see and asking them questions about the story.

o Imitate and reflect on words that your child uses, even if they aren’t perfect!

Example: If your child says “car,” you could say, “Red car! The red car goes fast!”

As a parent, you are likely very good at knowing what your child wants even if they don’t use words to tell you.

o However, it is helpful to intentionally create situations where your child needs to use speech (or an attempt at it!) to communicate their needs.

Example: Prompting them to ask for the snack they want by saying something like “tell me what you would like” or “you can say ‘more’ if you want more”.
If they attempt to speak (e.g. “goh” for “goldfish”) give lots of praise and provide the desired snack.
Require more speech each time for this activity (e.g. moving from “goh” to “gold” for “goldfish”).

It is hard to believe, but another school year is here! While exciting, the transition from relaxing summer vacation to busy back-to-school can be challenging. Read on for strategies to set your family up for success this school year.

Plan ahead

Before meeting the teacher, the first day of school, and any other milestones, talk with your child about what to expect. For children who have attended daycare or school before, talk about what will be the same as last year and what will be different. Help them to remember that, while many things will be different, many things will be familiar, too! When possible, tour or look at pictures of the school, classroom, teacher, and any friends that will be in the new class.

2. Listen

Offer a non-judgmental space for your child to express their nerves, concerns, and hopes for these next few weeks. Try not to jump in too quickly by saying things like “don’t worry about that” or “stop it, it will be great!” While such statements come from a good place, they can feel dismissive to your child. Instead, work to validate their feelings and address their concerns together.

3. Make it fun

One way to help guide your child through glass-half-empty statements such as, “I’m not going to have any friends in my class...it’s going to be the worst year ever!” is to play the “maybe game.” You could say, “That sounds really tough. I hear you – maybe that will happen...OR...maybe you will find a new friend and really like how your new teacher does things!” By validating their concerns instead of dismissing them, you offer space for both things to be true at the same time.

4. Re-frame

Help your child to re-frame their worries as reflections of the care you have for each other and the trust that you will be there for them at the end of the day – no matter what. For example, if you think your little one might cry at drop off, you could say “It’s okay to cry and miss me at school after I leave. I will miss you too! That is because we love each other. I will be there to pick you up and can’t wait to hear all about your day. What toy do you think you will play with first?”

5. Empower

Remember – your child is looking to you to gauge if they should be worried. Work to communicate confidence, instill bravery, and let them know that you know they can do it. If your little one thinks you are scared, they will have a much harder time pushing through. A brave parent is the most helpful way to ensure a brave child!

6. Wear your heart on your sleeve

...or your hand! One strategy to help young children with separation anxiety at drop off is to draw a heart on each of your hands. Tell your child that you can either kiss or tap your heart (or both!) during the day when you miss each other, knowing that the other person is feeling it too!

Preventative Strategies

Most parents naturally do many things to prevent problems from occurring in everyday life, such as putting up a gate to avoid a toddler from falling down the stairs. There are a number of other strategies that parents can implement to prevent many behavior problems from happening.

Take control of the environment. Though not always possible, sometimes we can prevent behavior problems by controlling the environment. For instance, if a child constantly tries to leave the house, a parent might add a lock to the door that is out of the child’s reach.

End on a high note. Rather than avoid situations, you can reduce the likelihood of problem behaviors by limiting the child’s time in a specific setting or with a specific person. Instead of staying at a birthday party for 2 hours, perhaps your child only stays for 30 minutes. Before any problem behaviors occur, allow them to leave on a high note.

Respond to your child’s cues. Many children engage in behaviors, such as whining, that signal that more serious problem behavior is about to occur.

Change how you give instructions. Instead of telling a child to stop what they are doing or asking them to perform a task, try giving instructions in a positive manner (e.g., “I need you to put your feet on the ground”).

Use visual or auditory supports. Visual and auditory supports like picture schedules, checklists, social narratives, timers or even verbal warnings help provide clear expectations regarding a child’s day and what will happen next.

Identify and respond to setting events. Setting events often set the stage for problematic behaviors and can include, but are not limited to, hunger, being tired, and feeling sick. They may not cause problem behaviors, but they certainly make them more likely to occur.

Limit demands on challenging days. Both children and their parents are more irritable and become frustrated more easily when the schedule changes or when they don’t get enough sleep. On days that are more challenging for you or your family, consider limiting the number of demands.

1. Course Selection

Choosing the right classes now can open doors later. Colleges look for rigor and relevance, not just high GPAs.

It’s not about finding the “best” college—it’s about finding the best fit. Academic programs, campus culture, support systems, and career outcomes all matter.

Summer Fun

It is hard to believe that another summer is almost here! As you plan for your family’s summer adventures, consider these quick tips to maximize success.

Plan ahead.
While you likely have some idea of what your child’s summer will look like, they might not. Children often benefit from advanced knowledge of what to expect, including expectations for their participation and behavior. Consider visuals that your child can reference as needed.
Put it to paper.
Write down the plans and expectations for your child to refer back to when there are questions. For example, it can be helpful to display a calendar of the family’s plans for the next few months on the refrigerator. Additionally, each child will benefit from a more detailed weekly schedule highlighting what they will be doing each day. Regular check-ins and revisions can set everyone up for maximal success.
Prioritize structure.
Structure can be hard to come by due to constantly changing summer schedules; however, children thrive on routine. For this reason, I encourage families to create new, flexible routines- even if only for that week. For example, set limits on screen time and indicate when your child should expect to spend time with friends, rest, play outside, and eat meals.
Praise success.
As we have discussed often on the Parenting Learning Center, praise and positive attention are powerful tools to let your child know when you are proud of their behavior. Whether it is adjusting to a new camp, playing cooperatively with siblings at home, or learning a new skill during swim lessons, remember to shine your spotlight.

What to do when your child bites or hits

One of the most difficult aspects of parenting toddlers is knowing how to manage the behaviors they exhibit as they learn to communicate their feelings. For many parents, biting and hitting are at the top of that list. Read on for tips on what to do when your child bites or hits...

Self-talk . Say to yourself, “I don’t like that they bit/hit and hurt someone else, but I can teach them other ways to express their feelings.”

Empathy. Ask yourself, “Wouldn’t I have a hard time expressing myself when I’m mad or upset if I didn’t have the language to do that, or the ability to problem solve in non-aggressive ways? I know how my child feels!”

Teach . Young children learn very early that their hands and teeth are powerful weapons that elicit an equally powerful reaction when used. However, this can cause lots of problems for you and your child. The key is to teach your child that biting and hitting hurt and there are other ways to express feelings without hurting others. Tell yourself, “I can teach my child how to respect others and use words to express feelings. I know it will take time and patience, but they can learn.”

When your child bites or hits, provide a brief teaching statement, such as “No bite. Biting hurts” and give them a word or action within their skill abilities to replace the biting. For example, “You can say ‘no hug’ instead” or “you can walk away.” When you do this, you are teaching your child how his behavior affects others and what else they can do instead.

Reinforce. Practice by setting your phone timer for 5 minutes (or longer or shorter, depending on how long you think your child can play with another child without your motivating praise) and say, “When you have played gently with Jack until the phone timer sounds, we can read your favorite book together. You are getting along so well.” Offering a reward as an incentive for self-control discourages conflict.

Praise. When children (even siblings) are getting along, it’s important to praise their effort frequently. Simple statements, such as, “Good taking turns,” or “You are playing so nicely together,” reminds them of the goal of getting along vs. fighting.

Teach compromise. When conflict arises, say, “Let’s find a way to let both of you play with that toy. I’ll use my phone timer to tell us when it’s your turn to play with it.” Your child can learn patience as they wait their turn, as well as problem solving and compromise—instead of biting or hitting.

What not to do:

Don’t hurt your child. Biting/hitting back and spanking are all behaviors you don’t want them to learn, so don’t use them.

Don’t overreact. Getting upset when your child bites or hits keeps you from problem solving. Keep yourself calm by using calming self-talk. Say to yourself, “This is a problem we can solve. I just need to stay calm to do it.”

Don’t threaten. Threatening your child creates fear but doesn’t teach the behavior you want. Instead, simply say, “Let’s work on ways you can get what you want without hurting someone.”

Giving Effective Instructions

See below for some quick tips to make your instructions as powerful as possible!

Make sure your child is paying attention to you before giving an instruction! Say their name and make eye contact. Get close to them when possible. Reduce all distractions by turning off television, music, etc.
Make sure you mean it! Try not to give an instruction you will not see to completion or threaten a consequence you will not give.
Try not to present the instruction as a question or favor...this makes it seem optional!
Only give one instruction at a time.
Tell your child what they need to do, rather than what not to do.

- Be specific- avoid unclear or limited statements, such as “Be good” or “Stop it.” It is more helpful to say, “Please walk” than “Don’t run”.

Use transitional warnings when appropriate. Some instructions may be more effective when proceeded by a transitional warning. (Example: “In 5 minutes, it will be time to turn off your tablet.”

Steps:

Offer instruction – specific, one step

Example: “Please take your plate to the sink.”

Provide warning – if…then

Example: “If you take your plate to the sink then you can have dessert” (logical consequence)”

When at all possible, frame positively

Example: “If you…then you can…(something your child likes)”

Avoid framing negatively

Example: “If you don’t...then you won’t get...

Follow through with stated consequence. Consequences that are immediate and meaningful are more powerful and effective in helping children learn to follow instructions.

Example:

“Please keep the toys on the floor.”

If your child complies, provide immediate, specific praise. If not, then provide a warning statement, for instance, “If you keep the toys on the floor, then you can keep playing with them." If they do not follow this instruction, quickly remove the toys and place them out of view/reach.

Potty Training

Recently, many parents have asked me how to know if their young child is ready for potty training. While this is unique to every child, keep reading for a few important questions to ask yourself before jumping in.

Are they able to follow simple two- to three-step instructions?
Do they seem aware of or bothered by their diaper?
Are they able to let you know when they have a dirty diaper and need to be changed?
Do they routinely display the ability to remain dry for longer stretches of time (around 2+ hours)?
Do they often wake from naps with a dry diaper?
Can you determine a pattern to their bowel movements?
Are they curious about other people’s use of the bathroom?
Do they have the motor skills needed to walk to the toilet and pull up/down underwear?

If you answered “yes” to most of these questions, it might be time to start thinking about potty training! Remember, each child is on their own timeline and there is no “right” age to accomplish this goal.

As we prepare to celebrate Valentine’s Day, check out this month’s quick tip to share the love with your children and let them know how much you appreciate what they do!

As you go about your day, talk to your child’s stuffed animals or other family members about all of the wonderful things they do. While praising your child directly - such as, “you did a great job staying calm” - is always beneficial, speaking positively about them to others can be equally powerful. As you are helping them get ready in the morning, you could say “wow, I am so proud of Alex for starting to brush his teeth all by himself!” While supervising your children playing, you could say “Olivia and Emma are such thoughtful sisters. I love watching them problem-solve and work together!” As you and your partner prepare for the bedtime routine, you can playfully “fight over” who gets to put your child to bed. For example, “I want to do it!” and “I also want to do it - I just love spending time together!”

The words your child hears you speak about them to others can become part of their internal monologue. Make the most of the little moments and share the love with everyone (and everything) around you!

Model Behavior

One of the most underutilized parenting strategies for young children is behavior modeling. So often, we are focused on teaching academic skills and forget that we must also expressly model the behaviors we want our kids to emulate. The car is one of the best places to focus on modeling because you have a captive audience and no shortage of natural opportunities to practice handling frustration.

Another car got the parking space you wanted?

“I am feeling so frustrated right now! I really wanted that space. Oh well, it’s okay - I have a plan B. I will just take a deep breath and circle around again.”

Miss a turn?

“Aw, man! I messed up - we are going to be late! Wait a minute…it’s okay to make a mistake. I can get back on track and keep my body calm.”

Don’t like the song your child has selected?

“I don’t like this song! But you do like it, and it is nice to show we care about other people by listening to things they like, sometimes.”

Try this out the next time you are in the car with your kids and wait for them to start repeating the same language when they are in a tough situation!

“That’s not fair!” – Tips for managing sibling jealousy during the holiday season

The holidays are a wonderful time of year. Parents spend weeks thoughtfully collecting gifts and checking items off each child’s wish list, eager to see excited reactions. However, the magic of the season can be interrupted by claims like “that’s not fair” and “he got more than me!” as children navigate jealousy over their sibling’s presents. While this is developmentally understandable, it can be frustrating and difficult for parents to manage. Read on for simple tips to manage sibling jealousy this holiday season.

First, take a deep breath. Remind yourself that jealousy is a normal emotion and part of the experience of being human. It does not mean that your child is ungrateful or entitled. Learning to deal with jealousy is a life skill that will be important throughout your child’s life.
Talk ahead of time about the thought involved with gift giving. Involve your children in selecting special gifts for their loved ones and discuss the joy of giving.
Remind children that everyone receives different gifts. The size, number, and presentation of gifts will vary. Inform them that it is normal to look around at others’ presents and compare, and this can lead to a feeling called jealousy.
Talk about jealousy - what it means, how it feels, and how this emotion makes us act. You might reference the movie Inside Out as an easy analogy.
You could say “jealousy is when we want something that someone else has and it makes us feel bad about what we have. This is a feeling that can make us also feel sad or angry. When we feel jealous, we might want to take the object we are jealous of, say something hurtful, or complain. It’s important to remember that jealousy is a natural emotion that everyone experiences at some point. It’s okay to feel jealous, but it’s how we react and manage our jealousy that matters.”

Discuss appropriate ways of coping with jealousy, including the following:

Labeling the emotion as jealousy and talking about it with a loved one. They could even say to their sibling, “I am feeling jealous right now.”
Parents can respond by saying “It’s okay to feel sad, I understand. You wish you had that toy too. We can take a break until the feeling passes or you can let me know when you’re ready to look at what you have.”
Having a mantra or saying to remind yourself when you feel jealous. For example, “It’s normal to feel jealous. I am happy for them. I have lots of things too.”
Ask the person politely if you can look at or play with their gift when they are done.
Take a break from the group to take deep breaths and re-set.

Remember, jealousy is normal and to be expected to some degree. You can model managing your own feelings of jealousy and use this as an opportunity to teach a valuable skill!

Giving Thanks

As we enter the holiday season, parents often ask how to foster gratitude in their children. We want our children to be appreciative and not take things for granted, as learning to be grateful can improve their relationships, ability to empathize, and overall happiness. However, this can be easier said than done. With Thanksgiving around the corner, read on for some simple strategies to help your family reflect on what they are most grateful for.

1. Set a good example

As with most aspects of parenting, our children learn best from watching us. When it comes to gratitude, we can make a big impact by actively expressing appreciation for the little things amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Try making a habit of verbally thanking your spouse, children, and other loved ones for all that they do. The more our kids hear us do this, the more they will internalize expressions of gratitude as an expected part of life. We are also then likely to see this behavior generalize to friends, coaches, teachers, and other settings.

2. Play the gratitude game

One of my favorite ways to foster a spirit of gratitude and optimism in children is playing the gratitude game each day. Many families I work with choose to do this at dinner, in the car on the way home from sports practice, or before bed. The game is simple- each family member shares the best part of their day, the hardest part of their day, and what they were most grateful for that day. You can even use a catchy metaphor, like “rose, thorn, and bud”. The rose is the positive aspect of the day, the thorn is the challenge, and the bud is what we are most grateful for. This activity has roots in mindfulness and has been shown to be a powerful way to shape our overall mindset and thought process.

3. Put it to paper

Another fun activity involves writing- or, for younger children, drawing- something we are grateful for each day. You can grab a notebook and help your child document their appreciation in a gratitude journal, leaving them with many pages to reflect on when things get hard. Trick or Treat!

As hard as it is to imagine with temperatures still so high, the holiday season is upon us! Starting with Halloween this month, we are entering a truly wonderful season with our little ones. You have probably already filtered many costume requests, settled on a winner, and are working to get your trick-or-treating plans in order. Follow along for some tips to make sure your experience is safe and fun for the whole family.

1. Beware – make sure to prepare!

While Halloween can be fun, it can also be over-stimulating and confusing. Make sure to explain what to expect using a script. For example, you could say, “We are going to put on our costumes, load up the stroller, and walk around our neighborhood. Lots of other people will be wearing costumes, too. Sometimes, they might be wearing masks or have a fake boo-boo, but it is just for pretend! We might see some of our friends while we are out, although we might not stay together the whole time. We will walk up to the front doors of some houses and knock. Someone might answer the door holding a treat! We can smile, say hello, or even say, ‘Trick or treat!’ We will then get to pick one piece of candy to put in our basket. Afterward, we will say, ‘Thank you,’ and walk back to the sidewalk. When it is time for bed, we will walk back home and talk about how much fun we had.” For bonus points, you can even practice the routine of trick-or-treating in your home leading up to the holiday!

2. Dress for success

Be mindful of costumes that restrict your child’s range of motion, vision, or balance. Consider the weather and make adjustments as needed if it is too hot out. Consider adding glow-in-the-dark elements to your costumes or stroller if planning to be out past dark. You might also practice reminding your child what you are wearing in case you become separated in a big group, such as “Look for mommy’s big yellow hat!”

3. Reduce pressure

If your child is refusing to wear their costume, in tears after the first house, or having an epic tantrum about not being allowed to take more than one piece of candy, don’t push it! It is okay if they trick-or-treat in their normal clothing or hand out candy from the porch; there will be many more opportunities to try again.

4. Keep it short and sweet

Especially for little ones, less is more when it comes to the amount of time spent trick-or-treating. Consider the timing of meals and bedtime in order to maintain your typical routine as much as possible. Make sure to eat a solid dinner beforehand and head out on the earlier side. That way, your little ones can explore for about an hour before heading back in advance of the larger crowds and older children.

Most importantly, remember to have fun and enjoy some treats of your own!

We want to know how to respond in a way that helps them overcome those back-to-school jitters and enter the year feeling confident and enthusiastic. Read on for some simple tips to make this happen!

One way to help guide your child through glass-half-empty statements such as, “I’m not going to have any friends in my class...it’s going to be the worst year ever!” is to play the “maybe game.” You could say, “That sounds really tough. I hear you; maybe that will happen...OR...maybe you will find a new friend and really like how your new teacher does things!” By validating their concerns, instead of dismissing them, you offer space for both things to be true at the same time.

4. Re-frame

Help your child to re-frame their worries as reflections of the care you have for each other and the trust that you will be there for them at the end of the day- no matter what. For example, if you think your little one might cry at drop off, you could say, “It’s okay to cry and miss me at school after I leave. I will miss you too! That is because we love each other. I will be there to pick you up and can’t wait to hear all about your day. What toy do you think you will play with first?”

To ensure a smooth transition and to support your child effectively, it's important to be aware of common mistakes and learn how to avoid them. Here are some common pitfalls and tips to help you navigate this journey with confidence.

Underestimating College Challenges

Many parents underestimate the range of challenges their children will face in college, assuming that academic issues will be their primary concern. However, college students encounter a variety of challenges, including social adjustments, mental health struggles like anxiety and depression, and time management issues. Being informed about these potential hurdles can help you better support your child as they navigate this new environment.

Ineffective Communication and Not Allowing Kids to Fail

It's easy to fall into patterns of either over-communicating or under-communicating with your college student, both of which can create tension and misunderstandings. Striking a balance is crucial. Make sure to maintain open lines of communication that encourage your child to share their experiences and feelings without feeling overwhelmed or pressured.

At the same time, it's natural to want to protect your child from failure but shielding them from every mistake can prevent them from learning valuable life lessons. Allow your child to experience challenges and figure out solutions on their own. This helps build resilience and problem-solving skills. Avoid texting or calling them all the time; show them that you trust them to handle their own issues. This trust is crucial for their confidence and independence.

Ignoring Available Resources

Parents often overlook the numerous resources available to college students, which can provide crucial support. Colleges offer a wide range of services, including academic support, mental health resources, and student organizations. Familiarize yourself with these resources so you can guide your child to the help they need when they encounter difficulties.

Over-Involvement or Under-Involvement

Finding the right balance between being involved and allowing your child to grow independently can be challenging. Too much involvement can hinder their development, while too little can leave them feeling unsupported. Provide guidance and support, but also encourage your child to make their own decisions and learn from their experiences.

Not Recognizing Their Adulthood

It's important to remember that your child is now an adult. They need to learn to advocate for themselves. Schools, clinics, and other institutions are not obligated to communicate with you anymore unless your child gives explicit permission. Encourage your child to come to you when they need help, but don't always step in to figure things out for them. Allow them the space to handle their own issues and come to you for guidance when necessary.

Summer Sleep

As summer progresses with exciting events like vacations, camp, and time with family, schedules can become nearly nonexistent. While flexibility is part of the fun of this time of year, our children’s sleep can suffer from this lack of routine. Keep reading for simple tips on how to make the most out of increased daylight hours and summer fun while maintaining good sleep hygiene. After all, quality sleep is no less important over the summer than during the school year!

1. Plan for change

Before working to increase consistency regarding sleep, remember that there will be frequent disruptions to your best laid plans. Each time you have visitors, travel, or need to wake up for camp earlier than usual, your schedule might suffer. If we expect frequent changes from the beginning, we can remember to be flexible and remind ourselves that we can always get back on track.

2. Consistent schedule

One of the most impactful changes you can make is to ensure that your children have a consistent bedtime throughout the summer. It is advised that weekday to weeknight bedtimes vary by no more than 2 hours (maximum!) and that morning wake times remain as consistent as possible. Daytime behaviors inevitably impact the next night’s sleep, leading to an inescapable cycle of tired and grumpy little ones. With increased daylight hours, your child’s summer bedtime might be later than during the school year- that is okay, as long as it is consistent.

3. Bedtime routine

Once you decide on a bedtime for your little one, remember to devote time to carving out a consistent routine. A good bedtime routine involves a series of ~3-6 activities carried out in the same order each night. This helps the child develop sleep associations, know what to expect, and prepare their busy mind (and body) for sleep. An example might include taking a bath, changing into pajamas, brushing teeth, reading a book, getting into bed, and singing a song. Whatever your routine involves, try to do it roughly the same way each night. For bonus points, you can write it on a piece of paper and place it on the wall for your child to reference, too!

4. Set the stage

Your child is likely to have an easier time falling (and staying) asleep if the environment is set up for success. Make sure the room temperature is cool (but not cold) and the windows are covered to prevent pesky summer daylight from creeping through. Some families find it helpful to spend the hour before bed indoors, away from the sun, to help their children transition to bedtime when it is still bright out.

5. Get back on track

Know that when you return from traveling or having visitors, your children are likely to have increased difficulty getting back on track with sleep. Remain consistent and return to your routines- your little ones will adjust quicker than you expect!

Ready, Set...Summer!

Congratulations on another school year well done! As we transition to the fun – and unpredictability – of the summer months, here are some tips to set your family up for success.

We have finally reached the time of year that many of our children have been waiting for since last August – school is officially out for summer. While those words can bring to mind wonderful memories and excitement for the months to come, many families find it difficult to find the right balance of plans and free time to keep everyone on track.

The challenge I hear most often has to do with the lack of routine and structure many children experience during the summer. They might be spending more time at home, attending a variety of summer camps, visiting relatives, or adjusting to a new childcare arrangement. With that in mind, give the following ideas a try:

· Plan ahead .

While you likely have some idea of what your child’s summer will look like, they might be a bit confused. Children often benefit from advanced knowledge of what to expect, including expectations for their participation and behavior.

· Prioritize structure .

Structure can be hard to come by due to constantly changing summer schedules; however, children thrive on routine. For this reason, I encourage families to create new, flexible routines- even if only for that week. For example, set limits on screen time and indicate when your child should expect to spend time with friends, rest, play outside, and eat meals.

· Put it to paper .

When in doubt, write down the plans and expectations for your child to refer back to when there are questions. For example, it can be helpful to display a calendar of the family’s plans for the next few months on the refrigerator. Additionally, each child will benefit from a more detailed weekly schedule highlighting what they will be doing each day. Regular check-ins and revisions can set everyone up for maximal success.

· Praise success .

As we learned in the March blog post, praise and positive attention are powerful tools to let your child know when you are proud of their behavior. Whether it is adjusting to a new camp, playing cooperatively with siblings at home, or learning a new skill during swim lessons, remember to shine your spotlight.

· Play, play, play!

A miraculous way to greatly reduce challenging behaviors in young children

Tantrums, hitting, and whining are some of the most common issues that parents share with me in my role as an early childhood psychologist. These challenging behaviors often force us to dig deep into an already-depleted well of patience, leading to an exasperating cycle of “let’s see if this works!” over and over again. What if I told you that there is a miraculous way to greatly reduce these behaviors and shift the tone in your home, for only 10 minutes a day? Enter Special Time!

Special Time involves spending about 10 minutes per day purposefully playing with your child in a one-on-one setting. During these few minutes, your child has your undivided attention — no phone, no chores, no work, no siblings. You may be thinking, “But I spend all day with my kids…how much more could they possibly need?” The mindset shift to keep in mind is quality over quantity. While we may spend lots of time together through the hustle and bustle of the daily routine, our children often don’t receive the direct attention they crave. The goal is to fill each child’s “cup” with positive attention each day through Special Time, greatly reducing their need to misbehave in order to get more.

Special Time should occur every day for about 10 minutes. During this time, your goal is to follow your child’s lead and allow them to be the star. Choose activities that allow for close interaction and joint play, especially those that don’t have many pre-determined rules. Great choices include blocks, trains, cars, dolls, coloring, and any other activities that allow for creativity and imagination.

Your primary job during Special Time is to notice what your child is doing and act like a sportscaster by narrating what you see. For example, “You have the red car and the blue car on the track,” or “The animals are sleeping inside the barn.” If you are unsure what to say, just take a guess—your child will correct you if you are wrong, and that is exactly what we want. This is their opportunity to take the lead in an age-appropriate setting…play! This also means that there is zero criticism and no correcting during Special Time. This is child-directed play, not teaching.

Your child is likely to love Special Time, which means that wrapping up can be a bit challenging. For a smoother transition once the 10 minutes are up, be sure to give multiple warnings so they know what to expect. When having Special Time with my own child, I prefer to set an alarm on my phone to let me know when to give the transitional warning. This way, I remain present during the play and avoid checking the clock. When your child asks for more Special Time, remind them that you are all done for today, but they will have another 10 minutes tomorrow.

While it is best to avoid dropping everything and commencing the 10 minutes any time your child starts to unravel, Special Time can be especially helpful as a “re-set” on challenging days. It should ideally be a routine occurrence that your child can count on, and not taken away as a punishment for misbehavior. Even if you only have 5 minutes, need to do Special Time in the bathtub after soccer practice, or make it work by drawing in the carpool line…every bit matters!

While Special Time is not a magic solution for challenging behaviors…it just might feel like one. So sit back, relax, and play!

Have you ever found yourself watching your child or grandchild’s behavior and thinking, “how in the world am I supposed to handle this?” ...if so, you are not alone! With so much advice floating around, many caregivers find themselves facing decision paralysis – fearful of making a wrong move and mishandling a situation. The good news is that there is a simple, research-based mindset shift that can help to guide us in the right direction: Shine Your Spotlight!

The behaviors of young children are ever-changing. One minute, they might whine, complain, and tantrum – even though they are wonderful helpers and good listeners just a short time later. Instead of getting stuck focusing on the unhelpful behaviors, first think about what you can do to increase good behavior. The most powerful way to do this is by shining your spotlight on the child when they are behaving well. When you shine your spotlight, you are providing lots of positive attention and letting the child know that you notice them. Praise is one of the most powerful ways to let children know that you enjoy their helpful behaviors.

Positive attention is also an important way to help children feel good about themselves. Praise sends an important message to children, so it is essential that you say something specific like, “Thank you for helping me,” or “I love that you’re playing so quietly,” or “Great job sharing with your brother.” The child will need to hear these words often in order to know you’re attending to them. Specific praise should also include non-verbal communication too (hugs, hi-fives, fist bumps, back rubs). Remember to praise frequently!

When children do not get enough positive attention for behaving appropriately, they learn that the best way to get attention is to misbehave. This might mean that you are having to manage more interrupting, yelling, whining, complaining, and arguing during the day. Children may also behave this way when they are upset, stressed, or just not getting their way. When caregivers respond to displeasing behavior with a brief period of ignoring- turning off the spotlight- they signal to children that they must behave appropriately in order to get attention. It is important to remove both verbal and non-verbal attention during these moments. Also, remember to return your bright spotlight with lots of praise as soon as the child is back to engaging in an appropriate behavior.

Give this strategy a try and help the children in your life learn which behaviors make them shine!

The Right Questions to Ask During (and After) an ADHD Diagnosis

ADHD is a neurotransmitter disorder that can negatively affect an individual's cognitive, behavioral, emotional, social, and executive skills functioning. School Counselors Celebrate During National School Counseling Week, Feb. 7–11, 2022

National School Counseling Week 2022, “School Counseling: Better Together,” sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), will be celebrated from Feb. 7–11, 2022, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

The special week honoring school counselors provides recognition for school counselors who “implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century.”

In a proclamation, Gillian Botha-Harvey, M.A. Clin. Psy., COO and Clinical Consultant, thanked school counselors for being actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; for working in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world; for focusing on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, career and social/emotional development; and working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. School counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in school counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.

“School counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students’ academic concerns, career options and social/emotional skills,” said Jill Cook, ASCA executive director. “School counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success.”

More than 100,000 school counselors nationwide will be participating in the week’s festivities. Many schools will be hosting special events and activities to call attention to the countless benefits of a comprehensive school counseling program.

ADHD is a complex and chronic disorder and is often accompanied by other coexisting disorders which complicate accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

To make an accurate diagnosis and develop an effective treatment plan, the individual’s cognitive, psychological, academic, and social functioning, including family relationships, need to be carefully assessed. Standardized testing and comprehensive clinical interviews are needed to identify the individual’s specific deficits arising from the ADHD and any coexisting disorders.

Medication alone will not effectively treat all the ADHD symptoms, especially executive functioning deficits such as organization, planning, time management and emotional regulation. Coaching to teach the individual strategies to compensate for these deficits is necessary. Parent counseling is also critical in these situations where parenting can either undermine or support the functioning of the child.

Likewise, medication may temporarily reduce the symptoms of coexisting depression and anxiety but therapy is essential in remediating the thinking issues directly related to these coexisting disorders.

Comorbid ADHD Complicates Most Diagnoses and Treatment Plans

Why is behavior therapy and parenting training so important for children with ADD/ADHD?

ADHD not only affects the individual child, but those around them as well. They can be disruptive towards others, make impulsive decisions, and seem to lack attention – all things that outwardly look like negative behavior that leads to punishment and severe discipline. However, with a proper diagnosis and treatment, these “problem” behaviors can effectively be managed.

As soon as a diagnosis is made for your child, it is important to start them with behavioral therapy. Behavioral therapy is a way for your child to learn or strengthen positive behaviors, and eliminate unwanted or problem behaviors.

But the burden of pursuing treatment for an ADHD diagnosis doesn’t fall on the child alone – Parents, too, must learn new ways of dealing with their children’s ADHD-related symptoms and behaviors. Training the parent in behavior management, coupled with behavior management therapy for the child, will strengthen the effectiveness of treatment.

Parent training in behavior management gives parents the skills and strategies to help their child. It may involve learning new ways of disciplining, such as positive reinforcement, or learning to be consistent in disciplining and managing their children’s behaviors. The therapist should meet regularly with the parents to review their progress, provide support, adjust strategies, and ensure improvement. Parents will take the skills they learned in therapy sessions and practice them with their children between sessions. It is extremely important for parents to be involved with their children’s behavior treatment, because parents have the greatest influence of all on their young child’s behavior.

Since children younger than six can experience more side effects from ADHD medications, parent training and behavior therapy proves even more necessary. For children six years and older, AAP recommends combing ADHD medication treatment, behavior therapy and parent therapy. This includes parent training in behavior management, behavioral interventions in the classroom, peer interventions that focus on behavior, and organizational skills training.

There are many actions a parents can take to help mitigate a child’s ADHD symptoms in their daily life. Try to establish an everyday routine from morning to bedtime, following the same schedule daily. Help your child stay organized by keeping their things in the same place every day, so that they are less likely to lose something. During homework time, manage distractions by providing a clean workspace and limiting noise such as the TV. (Conversely, some children with ADHD might find background noise or moving around helpful – figure out what works best for your child).

So that your child doesn’t feel overwhelmed or overstimulated, help them by limiting their options to a few choices in cases such as choosing what outfit to wear or what to eat for dinner. Use clear, brief directions when talking to your child, and repeat their questions back to them so they know you understood them. Help your child break down complicated tasks into simpler ones. Create realistic goals for your child, and give them praise or other awards when they achieve those goals.

When disciplining, choose directions, time-outs, and removal of privileges over negative reinforcements such as scolding, yelling or spanking. Encourage positive opportunities and experiences for your child – find out what they do very well, such as art or music – and create more opportunities for those activities. And most importantly, provide a healthy lifestyle for your child with a good night’s sleep, healthy diet, and plenty of exercise.

Helping Teens with ADHD (or without) Transition to College

Sending your child off to college is daunting – not only are they learning to be independent for the first time, but they are also taking their educational careers into their own hands without their familiar chaperones to guide them. So, what if your child has ADHD? This can make the transition from high school to college exceedingly more difficult. However, with proper planning and guidance, you can help ease the transition.

High school students with ADHD experience poor attention span, inattentiveness, impulsiveness and hyperactivity that can negatively impact their ability to perform well in school. “The transition from high school to college is a significant challenge especially if a student has ADHD, a specific learning disability or executive skill deficits such as poor planning, organizational, initiating and time management skills,” says Gillian Botha-Harvey, M.A., the COO and Clinical Consultant at Woodlands Behavioral Health and Wellness Center.

However, when your child is still living at home, you are there to monitor your child’s symptoms, curtail negative behavior, and offer direct support. But what happens when you’re not there to remind your child to not leave their math homework behind at the breakfast table or that their science project fair deadline is looming ahead? “Parents recognize that this behavior is not going to just disappear once the child goes to college,” says Botha-Harvey.

The best way to prepare your ADHD child for college? Plan ahead – ease up on the handholding, and work on teaching your child to manage their behavior independently now. One suggested tip is to get your child used to using a planner – whether it be a paper, electronic, or even by smartphone – to not only keep track of a to-do list and daily schedule, but effectively execute daily activities. This will help them when they struggle with time management skills.

You can also anticipate what lies ahead at the university and plan accordingly. Be sure to make sure your child is choosing the right course schedule at college for the upcoming semester. For example, don’t load up on too many lecture classes if your child has trouble paying attention and sitting still for long hours. Mix it up with shorter or project-based classes, making sure they do not play it too easy OR overextend themselves.

It’s also important to teach your child self-advocacy skills. Prepare them to talk with professors, deans, or counselors directly to explain how ADHD affects their academic performance and learning style. They should learn how to effectively work with professors and counselors to map out accommodations, such as extended test times or permission to record lectures. Parents and students may also want to research a “point person,” someone at their prospective college that can offer on-campus support. Check to see if the university has a disabilities office or counselor, and let your student reach out to them themselves their junior or senior year of high school. This person may help your student with accommodations and the proper paperwork to file. If your child takes ADHD medication, find someone in the college infirmary who can perform medical checks on them on a routine basis.

Another effective way to help your ADHD child prepare for college is through college prep coaching at the Woodlands Behavioral Health and Wellness Center. “Our counselors and coaches are specialized in preparing students for college and then coaching them through the first 6 months or year of college by teaching them effective strategies and skills to cope with and stay on top of their assignment load,” says Botha-Harvey.

The College Prep Coaching program includes:

Identifying any executive skill deficits or psychological issues, such as perfectionism, that may undermine their college experience, using psychometric rating scales and interviews
Vocational guidance for students, as well as help with degree and course selection
Planning, research, and composition of an assignment within specific timelines
Guidance on how to study complex material for college tests and exams
How to balance academic and social life at college

Furthermore, The Woodlands Behavior Health and Wellness Centers can work with students after they’ve arrived at their new college life. Long distance coaching includes:

The charting of timelines and deadlines for all course assignments in a semester, maintain awareness of test and exam dates and assignment submissions for each course, and maintaining awareness of when to prepare for tests.
Helping students to maintain their timelines, apply the assignment writing and study skills they learned in college prep sessions, and coping with the academic and social demands of college

It’s important to be wary that, no matter how much you prepare, things can still go south. If your child performs badly on their first semester, don’t resort to shaming and blaming. “College prep and long-distance coaching is critical for students who have either withdrawn from or failed their freshman year at college and are now returning to repeat their freshman year. Often these students have lost confidence as a result of dropping out of college. In addition to emotionally supporting them it is essential to identify what undermined their performance previously and to teach them skills and strategies to prevent this undermining their second attempts,” says Botha-Harvey. You should continue to encourage and seek support for your child, preparing them to jump back in the saddle.

And just remember – while you can no longer hold their hand, you can still offer support from a distance. Whether you’re a short visit or a long-distance phone call away, you can still offer guidance to your child. Just don’t try to fix all their problems, and instead help them to make decisions independently. ADHD does not spell out failure for your child’s college performance – in fact, with the right preparation, skills, and coaching - they can be independently and academically successful!

Is there a difference between therapy and coaching? How do I know which one is right for me?

Life is a long, rocky road with many ups and downs -but for some, overcoming obstacles and challenges can be trickier than it would be for the average person. If you’ve decided to seek outside professional help, you may have trouble discerning what type of help is right for you. Do I need a coach? Or do I need to seek a therapist instead? While both therapy and coaching provide solutions and are beneficial for clients, there are some key differences.

One key difference is that a psychotherapist Is trained to diagnose and treat mental illnesses, which includes treatment for anxiety, depression, PTSD, eating disorders, and other types of mental disorders. This type of treatment involves focusing on emotions, perceptions, behavior and uncovering your past. Psychotherapists hold post graduate degrees in psychology or counseling, and require licensure through state psychology or licensed professional counseling boards.

Coaches, on the other hand, help you with your personal and professional goals. While they may have specialized skills and training and/or belong to professional coaching associations, they do not require a degree or license, and are not overseen by a governing board.

Coaching will help you build skills and improve performance, keeping you on task with daily goals and obstacles. Coaching helps you deal with common problems that many children and adults face such as procrastination, tardiness, not meeting deadlines, emotional outbursts, disorganization, forgetfulness, and impulsive decision making. But when there’s an underlying issue or mental disorder that hinders a person’s ability to improve upon these skills – then there may be a need to speak to a psychotherapist instead. Either way, both coaches and psychotherapists will be able to track a patient’s progress and determine if another course of action is necessary.

Another key difference is pricing. Since psychotherapy requires extensive training and licenses, it may be a bit more costly. Coaching will have a set structure and program length, while psychotherapy may require ongoing treatment with less clear “start and finish” points.

Your ADHD medication helps with focus and impulsivity — but you still struggle with time management, organization, and self-esteem. Could an ADHD coach be the solution you need? Read on to research the pros and cons of coaching.

What Is an ADHD Coach?

An ADHD coach is a “life coach” specifically trained to help adults (and teens and kids) with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) better manage their lives.

For example, perhaps you want to switch jobs or stop chronic disorganization and lateness, which have been hurting your marriage. Or perhaps your child needs help with completing the piles of homework he gets, now that he’s in middle school. Or maybe you’re looking to better yourself all around — in areas like physical fitness, emotional growth, social skills, financial planning, and the workplace — and need guided motivation.

The solution, in each case, may be to team up with an ADHD coach.

What Can Coaches Do for People With ADHD?

A good coach can lead you to your goals by helping you develop

planning and management skills
healthier self-esteem and relationships
clearer judgement
self-motivation
time management skills
a greater sense of self-efficacy

The key, of course, is finding the right one. “You need to be an educated consumer,” says Harold Meyer, co-founder of Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ( CHADD ), of New York City, and the ADD Resource Center. “You should know what you want to change in your life and whether a particular coach can help you make the change.”

While a prospective ADHD coach should have experience working with clients and knowledge of the condition, the chemistry between the two of you determines success.

“One coach might have the ability to motivate you, while another will leave you frustrated,” says Meyer.

“Many clients walk into a coach’s office expecting one thing and getting another,” says Dee Crane, S.C.A.C., A.C.C. “Remember that ADHD coaches aren’t therapists, medical experts, or mentors. They help you achieve specific goals. If you only want to talk about how your parents didn’t understand you, a psychiatrist is a better bet.”

Similarly, Sandy Maynard, an ADHD coach, says coaching is proactive, and doesn’t necessarily deal with psychological issues. “Psychotherapy deals with healing psychological issues and is generally long term and intensive dealing with inter and intra personal issues as well as cognitive and behavioral development,” she said. “The focus is often on past history and how it relates to that individual’s development.”

One mistake clients sometimes make is hiring a coach who doesn’t specialize in ADHD. “They don’t realize that strategies that work for clients without ADHD often don’t work for people with ADHD, whose brains are wired differently,” says ADHD coach Michele Novotni, Ph.D., S.C.A.C., coauthor of What Does Everyone Else Know That I Don’t?(#CommissionsEarned)

The Impact of COVID on those with ADHD

For those that struggle with ADHD (Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder), everyday tasks can be a challenge. Throw in a pandemic and social unrest and you have the potential for a perfect storm. According to a recent ADDitude magazine survey, individuals with ADHD are currently experiencing higher levels of exhaustion, frustration, and anger.

“This is not only true for children, teens, and adults with ADHD, but also for close family members and caregivers. Americans are reporting significant increases in mental health difficulties related to the COVID-19 pandemic”, according to Clinical Psychologist Melissa Mignogna, Ph.D. at The Woodlands Behavioral Health and Wellness Center.

The impact of COVID-19 on society is far-reaching but has potentially significant consequences for individuals with ADHD. Individuals with attention issues may have learned the importance of routine and developed a structure for their lives that allows them to thrive. Enter COVID-19 restrictions and routines go out the window. Add in boredom, isolation and loneliness and the strategies that once worked no longer apply. Increased anxiety (due to finances, health, and social unrest) stirs the pot and can lead to the development of depression.

“If you are experiencing symptoms such as changes in sleep and appetite, persistent feelings of depressed or irritable mood, disrupted sleep, increased exhaustion, low motivation, worsening in inattention, overuse of substances or other sensation-seeking behaviors, feelings of hopelessness, and/or thoughts of self-harm or suicide, etc., psychological treatment services can help you to learn new strategies to cope with changes and manage stressors in a more adaptive and healthy manner,” noted Dr. Mignogna.

THE WOODLANDS, TX -- “I think there’s a significant chance that [the pandemic] can impact mental health, especially in a negative way,” said Clinical Psychologist Melissa Mignogna, Ph.D, who works at The Woodlands Behavioral Health & Wellness Center.

She said that reduced contact with loved ones and friends, a lack of routine, and the threat posed by the virus itself can be a major source of anxiety and increased depression for individuals.

To help with these difficult times, The Woodlands Behavioral Health & Wellness Center offers complimentary consultations to help children and adults determine if a counseling, medication or group therapy would be beneficial. They also offer Executive Skills Coaching to help children and parents create schedules and organization that will help them regulate behavior, improve academics, and meet at home demands.

Parent coaching is an option as well. It provides parents with new tools to utilize with their children. These tools help model healthy relationships and understanding of the world as it is in today’s environment, and cultivate effective parenting techniques that make sense to both the child and the parent.

The Center has also created a package for couples utilizing the Gottman Therapy Method. This consists of 5 sessions aimed at helping couples reconnect and understand each other.

Lastly, they have put together a young adult program. This pandemic has caused many young adults to not leave home, or, to return home suddenly due to colleges closing, lay offs and lack of funds. The program consists of individual therapy, group therapy and parent coaching.

Common Misconceptions About ADHD: Fact or Fiction?

FICTION: Some people think that kids with ADHD are “lazy,” or “oppositional”; while some might even write them off as “not as intelligent as their peers.”

FACT: ADHD is a neurodevelopmental problem. This means that it is a “brain issue” with the imbalance of neurotransmitters such as dopamine , which plays a key role in regulating one's: motivation, cognitive function, pleasure, memory, attention, and problem-solving.

ALL teachers have been appropriately trained and given all of the necessary tools and resources to effectively educate all learning styles of children in the classroom during their school day.

FACT: Most teachers are taught to educate the “typical” student and with their available resources (or some might argue lack thereof), they only have the means to educate the “typical child” versus the “atypical student” (i.e., the ADHD/learning disabled child) that may require more attention and special accommodations outside the standard structured classroom. For example, a standard elementary school punishment for misbehaving in class (whether it be from excessive talking, not following directions, or whatever the minor infraction might have been), would be to hold the child back from recess/free playtime. While this punishment seems to make sense for a “typical child” in a “time out scenario,” this could have the opposite (and negative) effect on an ADHD child, who desperately needed this free play/recess to relieve their excess energy which caused them to act out in the first place.

ADHD is an overdiagnosed pediatric disorder that only applies to children and usually remediates once they complete school. Adults don't really suffer from ADHD.

FACT: While it is most prevalent in children to be diagnosed at this age, partially due to such a “safety net” of observers (e.g., teachers, pediatricians, parents, family members, school and independent counselors, and adolescent psychiatrists) are available as a “team” to help all of our children get through adolescence, so that if one of them notices that the child is struggling, early intervention and diagnosis is possible.

FACT: It is estimated that approximately 30-40% of the pediatric ADHD population no longer meets the criteria for an ADHD diagnosis in adulthood.

MISCONCEPTION: Medication is the only effective treatment for ADHD.

FACT: While medication is shown to be effective in the treatment of ADHD, it is best used in conjunction with a holistic approach for maximum results. Think of it this way: to quote our Clinical Director, Dr. Jim Zettel, “Pills don't teach skills.” Treatment is most effective with a multimodal approach of behavior modification (including parent training for younger children), executive skills training, maintaining a healthy lifestyle to include good sleep hygiene, and a properly balanced diet with sufficient protein, good fats, and complex carbohydrates. With this combination (skills training, a healthy lifestyle, and a good support system), many have shown success weaning off of their ADHD medication altogether by utilizing their healthier coping skills.

“Come home when the streetlights come on.” Wasn’t that all our cue for the end of our summer day? I remember summers of sleeping in, eating cinnamon rolls for breakfast and then my mom shoving me out the door. We ran the neighborhood, going in and out of friends’ backyards, the thrill of hearing the chimes of the ice cream truck rounding the corner of your street and running inside for loose change before you miss him so you can get a sweet treat, seeing how many mud pies we could make or whose mom could stand us the longest running wild in their pool. We hear of the “good old days” when times were simpler, and less ridden with social media hashtags and retweets of #planningtheperfectvacay, #busymomlife, #thisisourcrazylife, #todolists, but I’m not talking about Back to the Future here, I’m talking as recently as the 1990s. It just seemed that summers were slower and more often filled with……well, nothing. (Of course, that was the 90’s when “the show about nothing” was at its heyday so maybe I’m seeing a pattern here). I can’t remember a single friend of mine growing up who had more than maybe 1 week of vacation and 1 week of camp on their summer “to do list.” Today’s kids seem like every waking second is filled with camp, basketball, playdates, reading lessons, music lessons, daily swimming practices, meets, or a baseball game. I wish I could tell you I wasn’t one of “those” parents, but sadly, I am. I am guilty of trying to cram every second of summer with one activity after the other. I even come up with themed activities and always over-plan and by the end of the day I discover I’ve had no fun at all with my kids because I was rushing us to the next “fun” activity.

“You will have fun, or I’ll make you have fun” …am I right? *sigh*. It’s like a summer treadmill that I’ve created for myself and I can’t get off. But there is much to be said for us all taking a breath and letting our kids be “bored.”. Child psychologist and mother of two, Dr. Vanessa Lapointe published an article on huffpost.com that was really freeing to me. She discussed that she actually loved hearing her children say they were bored, that she told them, “Good! Go be bored for a while.” This “bored” time allowed her children to listen to their own thoughts, use their imagination and daydream and to simply just breathe. Can you imagine the freedom if you just gave yourself permission to do NOTHING for just 15 minutes a day?! I mean NOTHING…no thoughts of laundry or “to-dos” or grocery lists, just sitting with yourself. Just imagine that for a minute; its freeing isn’t it? Could it be that we are robbing our kids of that? Could it be that by creating schedules where every waking second is accounted for, that we are teaching them that it’s not ok to just be free for a few minutes? I know I sure miss those simple days of looking for the streetlights to come on and going to sleep that night with only one thing on my to do list the next day: play until the streetlights come on once again. I know we all live busy lives; hey, I’m there with you and if you’re anything like me, you love a good to do list. Very few things I find as satisfying as marking off something from my to do list. For my little guys, though, perhaps I can teach them a better balance. Perhaps I can let them choose 2 things to be involved with this summer, not 12. I think it would be freeing for them and for me. Perhaps it’s something we all should try, summer’s not over yet, you know.

LGBTQ Youth Mental Health and Parental Support

There are a multitude of resources you can consult, including the American Psychological Association (APA), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), but the conclusions are the same – LGBTQ youth are experiencing mental health struggles at triple or more the rate of their heterosexual cisgender peers. While all mental health struggles are relevant and significant, let’s focus this Pride Month of June on the well-being of LGBTQ youth. Approximately one third of LGBTQ youth have seriously considered attempting suicide in the past 12 months. More than half of transgender and non-binary youth have seriously considered attempting suicide in the last 12 months. LGBTQ youth who have undergone conversion therapy, been pressured to change their sexual orientation or gender identity, or experienced physical harm or discrimination based on sexual orientation/gender identity have up to three times the rate of attempted suicide as LGBTQ youth who have been spared these experiences.

LGBTQ youth are most comfortable sharing their sexual orientation and gender identity with peers and least comfortable sharing with teachers, guidance counselors, and healthcare professionals. Straight friends and parents fall in the midrange. How can we encourage true expressions of identity and safety in reaching out for help? Casual comments are noticed by adolescents, even when they appear to be ignoring you or claim not to care about your opinions. Be mindful of how you speak about and treat others. If you are disparaging towards any group of people, that group may include your child or someone your child values. I have had many LGBTQ youth fearful of coming out to their parents based on comments the parents did not even recall – and these were accepting parents. If you are tempted to be a non-accepting or ridiculing parent – don't! Believe in your head all you want that “this is a phase” or others are unduly influencing your child but expressing these and similar beliefs to your child invalidates their experience, identity, and reality during a crucial developmental period.

People of all ages crave parental approval. Yes, even teenagers who scream, “I hate you,” and slam their doors. It is understandable to be confused or surprised by new information, but it is not acceptable to shame your child. If you as a parent are struggling, reach out to a qualified organization or mental health professional to guide you through your process. When Should You Take Your Child to See a Therapist?

Parents believe in taking their child to see the doctor when medical symptoms such as a fever or cough start to prevent serious health issues developing. Unfortunately this is not the case when they to observe symptoms of a psychological nature such as resistance to attending school, loneliness due to lack of friends, being fearful of new situations etc. A common misperception is that children and adolescents need to have acute symptoms or be in crises before they need to see a mental health provider. Early intervention when mental health problems start is also important to prevent the development of full-blown mental health disorders and crises.

Parents should be on the lookout for the following early symptoms of mental health issues:

1. Poor school performance with reports of:

Poor attention, distractibility, daydreaming, not finishing work
Disorganized, unable to plan ahead, leaves things to the last minute, doesn’t get assignments in on time
Restlessness, Impulsivity, behavior problems, talkative, poor social skills, careless
Difficulty understanding the concepts of reading, math, or difficulty with writing or written expression.

2. Longstanding difficulty socializing and making friends:

Self- isolating, acutely shy, becomes highly anxious in crowds,
Communication difficulties
Rigidity, emotional outbursts
Difficulty playing with others
Prefers video games and working on computer to interacting with peers.

3. Changes in emotional, behavioral and social functioning:

Sad, tearful, irritable, angry, withdrawn, poor sleep, poor appetite, fatigued
Separation difficulties, easily frightened, resistant to trying new things, irrational fears, frightened of germs, the dark, going to school, being alone etc.
Fighting with friends, stops socializing, hypersensitive,
Obsessive thinking, repetitive behavior.
Difficulty falling asleep, wakes frequently, frequent nightmares
Overreacts emotionally or becomes excessively anxious when faced with stressful situations.

4. Gets into trouble due to conduct problems at home, school or in the community:

Oppositional, defiant, temper tantrums when they cannot get their way, disrespectful.
Cheating, lying, stealing, chronic disobedience, breaking of rules etc.
Anger outbursts, physical and or verbal aggression, destructive, antagonistic.
Truancy, vandalism

5. Tell-tale signs of substance abuse:

Unable to stop or control drinking once they’ve started
Giving up old hobbies, sports or activities
Loss of motivation, feeling tired, unhappy, angry or uninterested in life
Borrowing money
Hiding pipes or other drug paraphernalia in their room
Using mouth wash to hide the smell of alcohol
Using eye drops to alleviate bloodshot eyes or dilated pupils
Declining grades in school.

5 Love Languages

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, there is emphasis on the impact relationships have in our lives. However, the quality of our relationships is much determined by our ability to communicate effectively. The Valentine spotlight indicates there is no better time to learn how to express your affection to your significant other or child. Expressing our affection seems like it should be easy, but our expression does not always translate to mean affection on the receiving end. Gary Chapman, author of the world-renowned book, The 5 Love Languages (Chapman, 1995), posits that humans experience and express love in five different ways. According to Chapman’s theory and research, people naturally tend to express love in the same way they prefer to experience it. We are literally doing unto others as we would have done to us. However, this expression of love is best communicated when it matches how our partner prefers to experience love. If we can learn to speak our partner's preferred love language, we can more effectively communicate how deeply we care for them, leading to healthier and more fulfilling relationships. Chapman’s theory is supported by empirical evidence showing improvements in relationships between couples and parents/children when affection is expressed through the preferred love language modality. Since beginning his research, Chapman's ability to break down modality of communication within relationships has even been applied specifically for teenagers and youth to build better relationships in school, and in the workplace under the 5 Languages of Appreciation.

The 5 Love Languages are:

Words of Affirmation: Sincere compliments/praise and acknowledgement to build up your significant other

Acts of Service: Actions such as providing help/assistance or doing something for your loved one

Quality Time: Undivided attention and devotion such as taking a walk together, talking, and listening

Receiving Gifts: Tangible gifts that show you are thinking about your significant other

Physical Touch: Physical touch, such as holding hands, receiving a massage, cuddling/close contact, and physical intimacy

Chapman applies the five love languages to parenting and explains caregivers can better communicate with their children by speaking their child’s preferred love language. Becoming familiar with the love languages can improve your family's communication and relationships in addition to your romantic relationship. You may be surprised to discover your love language. Blue Monday

Its already 3 weeks into January 2019. This means the majority of resolution makers should already be seeing some weight loss, have quit smoking, are saving money, have quit cursing, or whatever chosen change-for-the-better has been going well. The world should feel a little lighter, sun brighter, and people are very happy, right? We’ve had almost 4 weeks since Christmas, which feels like a lifetime ago, yet they have flown by and many well-intended resolutions to change have either not started or have already been broken. Did you make any resolutions, and if so, how’s it going? If you have had trouble keeping your resolutions to get healthy or focus on wellness you are not alone.

Breaking resolutions is as common as the custom of making them. In fact, Blue Monday, the third Monday in January, is said the be the saddest day of the year with broken resolutions being one of the handful of criteria that determined this date. We start hopeful, imagining ourselves feeling good and living a healthier lifestyle. We truly want that for ourselves, and we sometimes equate that desire with motivation. However, when it comes to executing the steps necessary to become healthier, to focus on wellness, our motivation is lacking. We then feel guilty, or like we’ve failed, or like we can’t achieve our goals. The feelings associated with breaking our resolutions further distance us from the wellness -focused lifestyle we desire and make getting motivated harder than before. Does this sound familiar? It is very common, and the good news is you can become motivated, achieve your goals, and resolutions can be started fresh at any time.

In order to be successful at making big changes we must have a mindset which is ready for the change. This isn’t easy! There is an entire field of study on health psychology which examines how biological, social and psychological factors influence the choices we make about our health. 5 Tips For Coping With Stress During The Holidays

In-laws: If you get along with your in-laws, this should be a part of the holiday season you are looking forward to. However, if you don’t have a “picture-perfect” relationship with your beloved spouse’s family (or even if you do), sometimes in-laws add an extra layer of stress to the holidays (unintentionally--of course!). Remember that creating new traditions, blending traditions, or abandoning old traditions that don’t quite fit with your new family dynamic can be hard on all of us. Things to remember during this time:

No one is a mind reader. You must be able to effectively communicate what you need and what is important to you. To do this, speak from your own experience and what you’re feeling, rather than blaming or being accusatory. I have often heard, when in-laws come to town, parents can feel undermined as a parent. It can sometimes be difficult navigating different roles or family dynamics that are changing (for example: a mother visiting her adult son, new daughter-in-law and new grandbaby, and grandma may have a very “overpowering” presence in her opinions on how she feels you should parent or treat her son, but if you practice effective and respectful communication, they are usually much more receptive ).

If, in their minds, they are trying to do something fun for the holiday season (i.e., giving candy right before dinner), let them know how you feel in a way they can hear (i.e. when you disregard what I’ve asked my children to do, it makes me feel unimportant as their parent) and in-laws can be more receptive, because they will not feel as blamed and will understand why that is upsetting to you. Remember, this requires everyone to be flexible and understanding, as both parties will be making compromises.
Traveling with family: Traveling is hard! For everyone, but especially for little ones. If you plan to travel this holiday season, BE PREPARED . Know that your little one is going to get upset because sitting down staring at a blank empty seat is difficult for all of us.

Make sure you pack enough things for them to do, but make sure it is things they like (this doesn’t necessarily mean an iPad!) Coloring books, reading books, word searches, sudoku, a small Lego set with a carrying case that is easily packable to travel between terminal(s) and gate(s) or card games are great things to bring. However, you know your child best. Find something that can keep their attention.

Also, if you do plan to travel, find a time that works best for your child. If it is usually when they nap or really in the morning when they are still asleep and are good sleepers , a flight around that time to ensure they sleep might be an option. Although, this can backfire. If it does, two things will happen. One, you’ll know for next time. And two, others are forgiving, and we have all been there. Give yourself a break and know that almost everyone on that flight understands your exact position traveling with an upset baby. There is only so much we can do!

Pack enough snacks for the plane to ensure that they will not get HANGRY on the plane. This will also keep costs down, so you will avoid having to purchase multiple snacks for your entire family after you pass through security or in the air (as they tend to be much pricier than their worth). Do not plan on packing liquids that will pass through airport security if you are traveling via air, or you will have a sad child if you have to throw away all of your packed beverages. Kiosks always have beverages available after you go through security. If you are driving somewhere, disregard this statement and pack PLENTY of waters!
Self-care: NEVER let your self-care plan fall to the bottom, or worse, off the list. Time feels shorter during the holidays and there never seems to be enough of it to get it all done. However, the airplane oxygen mask analogy fits here perfectly; Place your own oxygen mask on before assisting others, meaning: if you aren’t taking care of yourself, you can’t take care of others. It doesn’t matter how good the brownies are, if you aren’t there to watch and enjoy, they might as well not be there at all. Continue taking care of yourself during the season, remember your breathing techniques, exercise regimen, and show yourself some grace if it doesn’t all get done.
Social media craze: Don’t buy into the hype of social media. While everyone else’s holidays look perfect and happy, we never know how many hands were there to help decorate and set up. We don’t know the argument that happened right before or right after the picture was taken. For all we know, cousin Derek might have forgotten to defrost the turkey in time, while Aunt Cindy forgot to buy salad dressing for the salad, and no one put the Christmas sweater on the dog in time for photos, so he jumped in the lake while trying to escape from uncle Jim trying to chase him around the lawn with that sweater, and Fido will NOT be included in the photos this year. C’est La Vie ! We all put on best foot forward on social media (and attempt at life). Dare to challenge those pictures and remember, no one is perfect--nor is any holiday!
Reason for the season: Remember why we are all together celebrating the holiday. Never forget what a privilege it is to be close to the ones you love. There are so many people who can not be with the ones they love, some have passed, some are deployed, or some are in hospitals, etc. Remember how lucky we are to be with one another on this holiday season, even if they do drive us a little crazy!

Phobias: Fight or flight from the flutes explained.

Aulophobia (n): An exaggerated or irrational fear of flutes (musical instrument)

Seems a bit silly, right? Some people are terrified of something most would consider so trivial such as a musical instrument (that we typically get joy from), but to a sufferer of aulophobia - “woodwind” you know - stage fright at the orchestra is taken to a new level!

A phobia is an anxiety disorder characterized by the presence of extreme fears of a specific object, place, or situation that is out of proportion to the actual risk for harm or danger posed by the feared object. In children, phobias result in
intense feelings of anxiety/fear that disrupt an individual’s daily functioning and are significantly more intense than normal fears that commonly observed in childhood. For example, most children are fearful of spiders, but a child with a spider phobia may refuse to play outdoors or be within visible distance of a harmless spider. Extreme anxiety related to the object of a phobia causes activation of the sympathetic nervous system (i.e., the “fight or flight” response) and can lead the child to generalize their fear to other situations and activities and spend excessive time fixated on the fear. When exposed to the feared object, related situations, and thoughts about the fear, the child struggles to understand that their fears are inaccurate and/or unlikely to occur. Similarly, parents find it difficult to reason with a child due to their hyper-focus on the feared object.

Examples of phobias observed during childhood include phobias of blood and needles, exposure to vomit, choking, insects, becoming sick, or having a loved one become sick. Biological factors (e.g., neurotransmitter levels), family factors (e.g., genetic predisposition, modeling of extreme fears), and traumatic experiences can also play a role in the development of phobias. When left untreated, phobias can lead to the development of other problems, such as panic disorder, separation anxiety disorder, depression, and other problems. Cognitive-behavioral therapy and exposure-based therapy approaches are very effective in helping children and adults overcome phobias. With the assistance of a psychologist or counselor, the child will learn new strategies to help them manage feelings of anxiety/fear (e.g., diaphragmatic breathing, relaxation, self-reassurance) while they engage in systematic exposure to a hierarchy of anxiety-provoking situations associated with the object of the phobia. IS IT ADHD?... OR IS IT SOMETHING ELSE?

Could it be ADHD, or is my child struggling with Concentration Deficit Disorder (sluggish cognitive tempo / slow processing)?

Research has shown us that there is a subset of individuals who have very specific behavioral, concentration, and cognitive problems like individuals who have ADHD/Inattentive Type but are different from those with the inattentive form of ADHD.

Individuals with sluggish tempo because medications or concentration deficit disorder generally have most of the following symptoms:

Seems distracted, "spacey," lost in thoughts

Most of the research on individuals who have this symptom cluster have been on college students. The following associations have been found:

Academic impairment, anxiety, & depression
Worse sleep quality
Decreased psychological and physical quality of life
Emotional dysregulation
Executive dysfunction, especially with self-organization and problem-solving
High impairments in combination with ADHD

Clinicians and parents need to be aware that people who present with attention, distractibility, concentration and executive functioning problems can have different levels of physical and mental activity, ranging from hyperactivity to very low activity. It is important to differentiate ADHD/inattentive individuals from sluggish cognitive tempo types because these individuals respond differently to medications and to psychosocial interventions.

Learning Disability

A learning disability is a neurologically-based problem that impacts an individual’s ability to process, understand, and retain information. Examples of learning disabilities include dyslexia (difficulty with reading), dyscalculia (difficulty with mathematics), and dysgraphia (difficulty with written expression). One common misconception is that individuals with learning disabilities are intellectually delayed or are below average in intelligence. This is false, and in fact, the opposite is true; most individuals with learning disabilities have average to above average intellectual abilities. In other words, a learning disability does not mean that the child is slow or not smart, but rather it just means that the child learns differently than other children. Although learning disabilities present lifelong challenges, many individuals with learning difficulties are brilliant and propose revolutionary ideas and ways of thinking, such as Albert Einstein, Stephen Spielberg, and Henry Winkler (all individuals identified with dyslexia). Signs or symptoms of a learning disability can be easily overlooked. For example, difficulties learning to ride a bike, delays in speech, problems distinguishing between left and right, and oversensitivity to sounds, foods, or textures are just a few indicators that something more may be going on with your child.

Educational testing typically includes a comprehensive battery of neuropsychological assessments that evaluate your child’s intellectual development, academic skills, and executive functioning abilities. Goals of testing are to determine whether your child demonstrates a gap between their intellectual abilities and their actual achievement across academic areas. A learning disability is diagnosed when the child’s academic skills are significantly less developed than what would be expected based on that child’s age and intellectual aptitude. Results of testing will identify how your child learns, whether your child has any cognitive strengths or weaknesses, and other factors that may affect their school performance (e.g., deficits in processing speed, working memory, or auditory processing abilities). These results will be presented within a written report or F.I.E. (Full Individual Evaluation) that outlines the individual’s abilities and provides recommendations for academic accommodations that will address the individual’s learning needs and protect their educational rights. This is true even at the college level, as specialized services are available through universities and colleges that will promote the individual’s ability to learn and succeed in that environment. The National College Board also protects individual’s educational rights by granting accommodations such as extended time for testing and a quiet testing environment for tests such as the SAT/ACT.

While you always have the option to request an evaluation through the school district, this process can be laborious. The student has to go through RtI (Response to Intervention) to determine need for testing, which alone can take up to an academic year. If the committee determines that the child has not made “adequate” progress, they may agree to move forward with the assessment process.

Once approved, the school has 45 school calendar days to complete the evaluation, followed by 30 days to review the report with parents and to discuss educational options. What this means for your child is the potential that they may lose 1-2 years of learning in the classroom before they begin to receive the help that they need. An alternative option is to seek private testing services, which typically take 2-4 weeks from start to finish. You should have your child evaluated if they have received targeted interventions but have not made appropriate progress, and or if their efforts do not correlate to their educational success. The earlier the testing, the more effective the interventions have shown to be. Thus, it is important to trust your intuition that something may not be quite right with your child’s learning. Neuroscience recognizes that the brain is malleable; meaning that the brain can adapt and that the synaptic connections can be strengthened and that the brain can be “re-wired.” With targeted interventions, a child with a learning disability can be successful in the classroom setting.

Understanding Executive Functioning Skills

Executive skills help us regulate our behavior and allow us to execute daily tasks appropriately. Think of executive function as a chief officer of a company must do - analyze, organize, decide, and execute. Certain executive skills allow us to select and to achieve goals as well as develop problem solutions. There are patterns of strengths and weaknesses in executive skill development in all of us. However, if executive skill weaknesses are adversely impacting our performance at school or at work, it is important to address these issues so that we can succeed in an ever increasing complex world. In order to understand executive function, one must know the skills that are necessary for success. Executive functioning skills include:

Planning: the ability to create a roadmap to reach a goal or to complete a task
Organization: the ability to arrange or place things according to a system
Time Management : the ability to estimate how much time one has, how to allocate it, and how to stay within time limits and deadlines
Working Memory: the ability to hold information in mind while performing complex tasks
Metacognition: the ability to stand back and take an objective view of oneself; the ability to observe how you problem solve
Response Inhibition: the capacity to think before you act
Self-regulation of affect: the ability to manage emotions in order to achieve goals, complete tasks, or control and direct behavior
Task Initiation: the ability to begin a task without undue procrastination, in a timely fashion
Flexibility: the ability to revise plans in the face of obstacles, setbacks, new information or mistakes
Goal-directed persistence: the ability to follow through to the completion of a goal and not be put off by the demands of our competing interests
Sustained attention: the capacity to be paying attention to a situation on task in spite of distractibility, fatigue or boredom

Development of Executive Skills

Response inhibition, working memory, emotional control, and attention all develop early within the first 6 to 12 months of life. Children show planning skills when they find a way to get a desired object. Planning is more evident when a child walks. Between 12 and 24 months, flexibility is developed because children can react to change. Other executive skills, such as task initiation, organization, time management, and goal-directed persistence develop later, around preschool and early elementary school years. Around the time of puberty, the frontal part of the cortex of the brain matures, allowing individuals to perform higher level tasks such as analyzing, planning, organizing, adjusting, and completing task in a timely manner.

Neurological Base for Executive Skills

The neurological base for executive skills is the frontal brain systems, which includes the frontal and prefrontal cortex along with connections to adjacent areas. The prefrontal brain systems are among the last to fully develop, usually in late adolescence, and they are the final common pathway for managing information and behavior from other brain regions. A professional psychological assessment is the surest way to determine whether your child has executive function weaknesses.

What can you do to improve executive function?

Executive skill coaching is a collaborative process between a therapist and student that helps improve their executive skills. Coaching can help students set and achieve their goals, create an individual planning system, develop the skills to regulate emotions, identify strategies for enhancing strengths and acknowledging weaknesses. Students learn how to manage time and tasks, avoid distractions and temptations, and develop good work.

Help Your Child Cope with School Transitions

Transitioning from the familiar to the unfamiliar and from the predictable to the unpredictable makes transitions a challenge at any age. School transitions, whether 4 or 18 come with a sense of loss of the familiar, anxiety and excitement from their anticipation of their new environment. This can result in depression, acute anxiety or unrealistic overly optimistic expectations of their new environment.

Parents can help balance these emotions by starting a dialogue with their child then listening to their child's feelings and expectations. There are many things you as a parent can do to help your child to make this transition less stressful.

1. Reduce Anticipatory Anxiety

During these transitions the child's imagination can run riot anticipating all the good and bad things they think may happen in this new unfamiliar environment. The following tips can help parents reduce their child's anticipatory anxiety:

Visit and tour the school before the first day.
Watch for uncharacteristic changes in behavior such as becoming withdrawn, more clingy or aggressive.
Let your child know that it is normal to be excited and apprehensive about the changes they are going to make. Stress your positive experiences when you started a new school.

2. Encourage Responsibility, Independence, Self-advocacy and Assertiveness. These are critical lifelong skills. They will however never learn these skills if you do everything for them and keep rescuing them in difficulty situations.

Learning to take responsibility starts at home where they are expected to do chores. By successfully completing chores they will build self-confidence.
Teach him to ask for help in class if he doesn't understand something, talk to the teacher himself when he forgets his homework or doesn't get an assignment in on time and approach the counselor to report the incident himself when he feels that another student has wronged him.
Use role play or read stories that teach him to how appropriately stand up for himself when another child tries to bully, tease or control him.

3. Setting Realistic Expectations

The American College testing Program estimated that in 2008 34% of freshman who dropped out of college because they were under-prepared, overconfident and had unrealistic expectations about college. (Harke, Brian, Ed.D twitter.com/Brianharke )

Avoid warnings and intimidations about how difficult their new school is going to be. Share your stressful experiences at High school or college. Emphasize that everyone gets stressed. Discuss some simple stress management techniques such as deep breathing they can use to lower anxiety levels when under stress.
Set Realistic Personal and Academic Goals- Ask your child what their short and long-term personal and academic goals are for high school or college other than getting good grades. Ask them if they will be able to discipline themselves to keep academic commitments such as attending and preparing for class, completing and submitting assignments by deadlines and challenge them when you know they have difficulty in these areas.
Ask them what help they will need to get through the required reading loads, taking notes in class, studying for exams, managing time, organization, planning and initiating assignments? Encourage them to find speed reading classes and executive skills coaching they could complete during the summer break to help them work more efficiently and productively.

Do you often feel there is too much of a battle to get them to do anything else?

Summer is a great opportunity for kids to experience more of what life has to offer, but far too often kids get stuck experiencing what their screens have to offer instead. Consider these simple guidelines to help foster a summer of growth!

1. Have a conversation with them about their technology use and other activities.

Ask them how much time they think is healthy on a screen.
What other interests or hobbies do they have that they can experience during the summer
What do they think they can do to earn their entertainment technology time. (Have an idea of what you want and see if you can get them there as well).

The more you ask them and help them to explain their thoughts and feelings to you, the better communication you will have with them in the future.

2. It’s important to think about how your child is maturing and how you as the parent want to instill certain values. These could include things such as time spent as a family, academics, exercise, creating relationships and of course time spent on technology. Don’t get caught up in the specifics and think of the principles.

Kids need structure... not endless time on technology
Parents need to spend quality time with kids... not just time on technology in the same room.
Kids want to feel like their parents care about their interests
Kids need to build other skills as well and develop non-technology hobbies

It is always a good idea to find opportunities to continue having healthy conversations with you kids. Ask them what they notice is different during the time they are playing video games compared to when they are not. You want them to recognize that they are different when they aren’t playing as much. This will give them some understanding and buy-in to the idea of creating the balance and structure that makes for happier kids. Then ask them about how they think you feel when they are nicer and have a better attitude. This helps build empathy and provides you an opportunity to praise positive behaviors and better attitudes.

If you communicate with your kids and create a summer plan to help them experience more than what their screens offer, you will have happier kids and a more fulfilling summer!
