Social Skills Group for Children and Adolescents
If your child or adolescent is struggling with ADHD, our Social Skills Group, helps boys and girls who are interested in connecting with others and learning specific strategies for living successfully. During this eight-week program your child or adolescent learns to communicate more effectively, initiate social interactions, resolve conflict, accept responsibility, notice and manage feelings, deal with low self-esteem issues, problem solve, and recognize social cues.
Benefits to the social skills training group include:
- Children will learn strategies for interacting with classmates, family, friends, as well as bullies.
- Weekly sessions will incorporate the basic skills of making eye contact, why it is so important, why we want to say hello and goodbye, how to be patient, and wait ones turn.
Emphasis in the group will be on learning appropriate communications skills to facilitate positive relationships. Children will learn how to read and interpret nonverbal cues and respond appropriately to social cues.
- They will learn how to initiate and maintain positive social interactions.
- The group will focus on recognizing and interpreting emotions including how to identify and manage their strong emotions such as anger, frustration, or low self-esteem.
- Group participants will learn how to take and accept responsibility for their actions and learn how to develop and strengthen their self control skills.
Self expression, individual and group problem solving, imagination, and self confidence will be encouraged and developed through the use of improvisational role-play of the weekly topics.
- Participates will learn the process of decision making.
