The transition from high school to college is one of the most challenging transitions in the lives of those with a history of ADHD, learning disabilities or just underachievement will face. Smart confident students who made it through high school with a high grade point average can quickly become overwhelmed, despondent and fail due to attention, memory and executive functioning problems.
ADD Wellness Group’s College Program was designed to help intelligent, talented students with a history of ADHD, learning disabilities or just academic underachievement get off to a good start and maintain their grade point average at college without challenging their need for independence.
Our program includes onsite testing and psychopharmacological evaluations and long-distance counseling, coaching, and medication monitoring sessions via video-conferencing.
College Preparatory Workshops which help students understand the new challenges they face at college and teach them strategies to successfully make this transition.
- Testing, diagnosis, recommendations for academic accommodations, and assisting the college disability office regarding the implementation of accommodations.
- Working memory training using Cogmed, an on-line home-based computer program, that can be used from a distance to significantly improve comprehension and reasoning abilities.
- Executive Functioning Assessment and Counseling, through video conferencing sessions, to identify impaired executive functioning skills such as organization, planning and time-management and then provide therapeutic support while they learn strategies and how to use tools to compensate for these difficulties.
- Psychopharmacology evaluations to determine whether medication is a solution for attention and impulse control problems followed by monthly long-distance medication follow-ups conducted via video conferencing to monitor the effectiveness of medications.
- Academic and Life-skills coaching, through video conferencing sessions, to help the student learn academic skills such as essay writing, guide them regarding choice of majors, help them cope with stress, and provide social skills guidance with regard to any social interactional difficulties they may experience such as a difficult roommate
- Nutritional counseling via video-conferencing for optimal cognitive functioning, weight management and sports performance.
- Parent Counseling and coaching to guide parents how to facilitate and motivate their college student and cope with apparent problems without threatening their sense of independence.
